This article reviews current scientific knowledge on the toxicity and carcinogenicity of microcystins and compares this to the guidance values proposed for microcystins in water by the World Health Organization, and for blue-green algal food supplements by the Oregon State Department of Health. The basis of the risk assessment underlying these guidance values is viewed as being critical due to overt deficiencies in the data used for its generation: (i) use of one microcystin congener only (microcystin-LR), while the other presently known nearly 80 congeners are largely disregarded, (ii) new knowledge regarding potential neuro and renal toxicity of microcystins in humans and (iii) the inadequacies of assessing realistic microcystin exposures in humans and especially in children via blue-green algal food supplements. In reiterating the state-of-the-art toxicology database on microcystins and in the light of new data on the high degree of toxin contamination of algal food supplements, this review clearly demonstrates the need for improved kinetic data of microcystins in humans and for discussion concerning uncertainty factors, which may result in a lowering of the present guidance values and an increased routine control of water bodies and food supplements for toxin contamination. Similar to the approach taken previously by authorities for dioxin or PCB risk assessment, the use of a toxin equivalent approach to the risk assessment of microcystins is proposed. D

The photosynthetic performance of Microcystis aeruginosa FACHB 854 during the process of UV-B exposure and its subsequent recovery under photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) was investigated in the present study. Eight hours UV-B radiation (3.15 W m −2 ) stimulated the increase of photosynthetic pigments content at the early stage of UV-B exposure followed by a significant decline. It suggested that UV-B damage was not an immediate process, and there existed a dynamic balance between damage and adaptation in the exposed cells. Short-term UV-B exposure severely inhibited the photosynthetic capability, but it could restore quickly after being transferred to PAR. Further investigations revealed that the PS II of M. aeruginosa FACHB 854 was more sensitive to UV-B exposure than PS I, and the oxygenevolving complex of PS II was an important damage target of UV-B. The inhibition of photosynthetic performance caused by UV-B could be recovered to 90.9% of pretreated samples after 20 h exposure at low PAR, but it could not be recovered in the dark as well as under low PAR in the presence of Chloromycetin. It can be concluded that PAR and de novo protein synthesis were essential for the recovery of UV-B-damaged photosynthetic apparatus.

Tai Lake is the third largest freshwater lake in China with annual cyanobacteria blooms. Microcystins produced by these blooms have serious health risks for populations surrounding the lake, especially for people living on Tai Lake, because they usually drink raw lake water after a simple alum treatment. This study presents data on the detection and identification of microcystins in waters used for daily life by people living on Tai Lake, during the cyanobacterial blooming in July 2007. The health risks from drinking these microcystin-polluted waters were also calculated. The main microcystins detected by high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry in the water samples collected from two parts of Tai Lake (Wuli Lake and Meiliang Bay) were MC-LR (4.33-12.27 lg/L), MC-RR (8.36-16.91 lg/L) and MC-YR (1.41-5.57 lg/L). Risk assessment showed that the drinking water simply treated by alum was not safe. The lowest calculated hazards ratios in all water samples was 6.4, which indicated that the risk of microcystins exposure from drinking water was over six times higher than the tolerable daily intake (TDI) recommended by The World Health Organization (WHO). Further studies should be conducted to elucidate the relationships between the epidemiology of people living on Tai Lake and microcystins exposure from drinking water. # 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
