Use of principal component analysis in the evaluation of adherence to statin treatment: a method to determine a potential target population for public health intervention

Abstract: The prevalence of statin use is high but adherence low. For public health intervention to be rational, subpopulations of nonadherent subjects must be defined. To categorise statin users with respect to patterns of reimbursement, this study was performed using the main French health reimbursement database for the Aquitaine region of south-western France. The cohort included subjects who submitted a reimbursement for at least one delivery of a statin (index) during the inclusion period (1st of September 2004-31s… Show more

“…Statins, 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors, have been introduced as the most potent cholesterol‐lowering agents and accepted to be safe and low‐priced drugs as a result of its worldwide longtime usage . Simvastatin, a lactone form of statins, has been shown to have anabolic effects on bone metabolism and stimulates bone formation via the BMP‐2 pathway .…”

“…Based on quantities of resources used and unit costs, the present study reveals a high discrepancy between France and Italy even though both countries reached a consensus in their clinical practice guidelines relating to all phases of sarcoma management (initial examination and diagnosis, histopathological report, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy), excluding follow-up after therapy [33,34]. Differences in the quantity of resources used could be controlled through study design (e.g.…”

“…Using real-world data, in this paper, we showed how SSA allows the identification of patterns in prescriptions that might not be detected using standard statistical approaches and how these patterns are associated with future discontinuation of opioid therapy. In recent years, epidemiological literature showed an increasing interest in different data mining techniques to characterize drug consumption [36,37]. Multivariate exploratory methods, such as principal component analysis, multiple correspondence analysis and agglomerative hierarchical clustering.…”
