The herbicide propisochlor can be introduced into the water cycle via agricultural activities, thus possibly leading to harmful ecological effects. It is significant for the development of a rapid method for propisochlor analysis in water. In this work, a rapid homogeneous immunoassay based on fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) was firstly developed for the determination of propisochlor in pond water. The developed FPIA assay can be completed within only 14 min; the 50% inhibition concentration (IC 50 ) was 125.1 ng/mL and the limit of detection was 8.4 ng/mL. The recoveries of propisochlor in pond water ranged from 80.0% to 86.6%. A high performance liquid chromatography confirmation showed a good correlation with the developed FPIA (R 2 = 0.9748). The developed FPIA exhibited satisfactory rapidity, high sensitivity and excellent specificity, meeting the standards of the screening assay of propisochlor in pond water on site. The molecular modeling showed that the alkoxyalkyl of chloroacetamide herbicides exerted important effects on the herbicide-antibody binding.

Since the 1950s, pesticides have been used in agriculture. The increase in their consumption has been observed in recent years. In this work, it was determined the concentration of pesticides in the atmosphere of São Paulo and Piracicaba cities (sugarcane plantation site) and the hazard quotients and cancer risk caused by inhalation of these compounds were calculated. Twenty-three samples were analyzed and 34 pesticides associated to atmospheric particulate matter (with diameter equal to or less than 2.5 (PM 2.5) and 10 µm (PM 10)) were investigated by gas chromatograpy-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Fourteen compounds including organochlorines, organophosphorus, and pyrethroids pesticides, were determined in these samples. The concentrations in the particulate matter ranged from 17 pg m −3 (tebuconazole) in Piracicaba, to 166 pg m −3 (endrin aldehyde) in São Paulo. The highest values of daily inhalation exposure for heptachlor were 9.0 × 10 −5 mg kg −1 day −1 at Piracicaba, and 6.5 × 10 −5 mg kg −1 day −1 at São Paulo, in both cases registered in infants. The values of the hazard quotients are lower than 1.0, indicating that there is no danger to the exposed population, it is health protective. On the other hand, the cancer risk calculations for heptachlor resulted in values above those recommended by US Environmental Protection Agecy (EPA).

Covalent organic frameworks and metal–organic frameworks for sustainable adsorptive removal/extraction of dirty dozen chemicals: A review

Dirty dozen chemicals (DDCs) are a group of 12 extremely toxic chemicals that were recognized at the Stockholm convention in 2001 for their severe impact on the ecosystem and human health. Despite the embargo and restraint placed on DDCs usage, these chemicals continue to find their way into the ecosystem because they are still secretly or openly applied by many nations, especially in African regions. Moreover, DDCs can still be perceived where they have been employed previously before the Stockholm convention treaty due to their persistent profile. This study aimed to critically review original works directed toward the removal of various dirty dozen chemicals using covalent and metal–organic frameworks (COFs and MOFs). Specifically, in this study, various COFs/MOFs and their composites with remarkably tailored adsorptive profiles are evaluated for their adsorption efficiency for different DDCs. In addition, the effect of various operating parameters that are of importance to environmentalists and various stakeholders for optimization purposes was empirically discussed. This review also fills knowledge vacuums about the COF/MOF‐DDCs adsorption process, offers insights into their reusability potential, fundamental mechanism, isotherm, and kinetic modeling, and offers a framework for future studies. Findings from this study revealed that COF and MOF have high DDC removal capacity and reusability potential attributed to their admirable porosity and the existence of a plethora of oxygen‐rich functional groups that allow for better interactions with DDCs through chelation, halogen bonding, H‐bonding, and π‐π interactions and stacking. This points to the upscaling potential of this remediation technique. Future researchers need to direct more efforts to the use of density functional theory for mechanism interpretation, exploration of hybrid technology, cost analysis, scalability, isotherm, thermodynamics, adsorption, and desorption kinetic modeling.
