“…However, at times it increases the intensity and frequency of contractions in the uterus, which in turn damages the UC (Linneen et al. , 2005), causes greater fetal mortality (Alonso‐Spilsbury et al. , 2004; Mota‐Rojas et al.…”

“…The rate of stillbirths increases from 2.4 to 10.5% when the farrowing time increases from 3 to 8 h (Alonso Spilsbury et al, 2004). Sows with farrowing duration of longer than 5 h have been reported with 1.4 ± 1.8 stillborn piglets whereas sows with duration of farrowing shorter than 5 h had 0.4 ± 0.8 stillborn piglets (Oliviero et al, 2010).…”

“…It was shown that, despite a significant reduction of the farrowing duration, this treatment even increased the stillbirth rate, the number of piglets with ruptured umbilical cord and meconium staining on the skin, and the need for obstetrical intervention (Alonso Spilsbury et al, 2004;MotaRojas et al, 2002MotaRojas et al, , 2006. It was concluded that oxytocin treatment at the onset of parturition (immediately after the birth of the first piglet) increased the myometrial activity and decreased the uterine blood supply that may result in foetal distress.…”

“…In several recent studies attempts were made to reduce stillbirth rate by speeding up the delivery process with oxytocin injections immediately after the birth of the first piglet. It was shown that, despite a significant shortening of the expulsive stage, this treatment even increased stillbirth rates, the number of newborn piglets with a ruptured cord, the number of piglets with meconium staining on the skin, and the need for obstetrical intervention (Mota-Rojas et al 2002;Alonso-Spilsbury et al 2004). So the use of oxytocin in cases of uncomplicated farrowings should be avoided.…”
