Use of organic waste for the production of added-value holocellulases with Cellulomonas flavigena PR-22 and Trichoderma reesei MCG 80

Abstract: We evaluated the production of holocellulases from the cellulolytic microorganisms Cellulomonas flavigena PR-22 and Trichoderma reesei MCG 80 using as substrates the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and digestates from a hydrogenogenic-methanogenic bioenergy production process. The first set of experiments (E1) used the mutant actinobacteria C. flavigena PR-22 whereas another set (E2) used the mutant filamentous fungi T. reesei MCG 80. In E1 with OFMSW as substrate, xylanolytic activities rang… Show more

“…Based on the results obtained, the authors concluded that the highest activity of esterase was achieved when the substrate consisted of 50% of the digestate and 50% of the food residues enriched with sawdust. In contrast, the results of the study conducted by Escamilla-Alvarado et al [93] showed that the production of holocellulases by T. reesei reached the highest values when the digestate from hydrogenogenic digestion was the carrier for the multiplication of microorganisms.…”

“…Representative laboratory-scale studies on enzyme production from the OFMSW are listed in Table 1. [19] Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are polyesters of hydroxyl fatty acids that are stored by a variety of bacteria as intracellular carbon and energy reserve materials [20]. PHAs can be synthesized by over 75 different bacterial genera as an intracellular carbon and energy reserve and/or as a sink for reducing redundant power consumption or electrons under unfavorable environmental and nutritional conditions [21].…”

“…Biorefinery is the sustainable processing of biomass into a spectrum of marketable products (Escamilla-Alvarado et al, 2011, 2013bFava et al, 2012;Kirtay, 2011), which means: materials, chemicals, food and feed, and energy (Figure 1). Biorefininig is a worldwide growing technology.…”
