Use of multicriteria analysis and GIS for selecting sites for onshore wind farms: the case of Andros Island (Greece)

Abstract: Since wind power is one of the most promising sources of Renewable Energy (RES), the number of wind farms installed around the world is constantly increasing. The aim of this paper is to develop a mechanism for determining and evaluating the suitability of areas for siting wind farms, using a combination of Multi-criteria Data Analysis and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This study was carried out on the island of Andros, Greece. The process involved a four-step gradual exclusion of unsuitable areas for … Show more

“…There are also situations where computer systems have been used to determine the location of new wind farms. For example, a multicriterial data analysis based on geographic information systems (GIS) was the basis for choosing the optimal position for a wind farm in Greece (Bili and Vagiona, 2018).…”

“…Criteria selection is required for making decisions. Possible alternatives must be quantified and must contribute to the decision-making process [33][34][35]. These criteria may be factors or limiters.…”

“…These criteria may be factors or limiters. A factor is a criterion that negatively or positively affects the possible location for the energy production plant, while a limiter (or exclusion criterion) restricts the location potential, excluding possible installation [33,34].…”
