Use of Mefluidide for Turf Overseeding

Abstract: The effect of mefluidide, a growth regulator, on the growth of annual blue-grass (Poa annua L.) was evaluated under pot culture and field conditions. In pot culture, mefluidide caused a significant reduction in shoot and root dry weight and tiller number of single annual bluegrass plants, and of annual bluegrass planted at high densities. In the latter case, mefluidide also increased the success of ‘Penncross’ creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) overseeded into the annual bluegrass. Overseeding succe… Show more

“…Eggens et al. (1989) observed 4 wk of growth suppression in CB and improved turfgrass quality while reporting severe injury in AB. The introduction of EP in 1999 renewed interest in research on the chemical suppression of AB seedheads (Askew et al., 2006; Borger, 2008; Gelertner & Stowell, 2001; Kane & Miller, 2003; Kopec et al., 2004).…”

“…With widespread use of creep ing bentgrass on golf greens and fairways, the ability to control or eliminate annual bluegrass in bentgrass swards has become increasingly important. Cultural practices, particularly mowing practices (Latham, 1985;Pierce et al, 1987) and application of growth regulators (Turgeon, 1974;Eggens et al, 1988), may be useful in this regard. Nitrogen source may also affect the competitive bal ance between annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass.…”
