Abstract: Exact data regarding the clinical role of maggot debridement therapy (MDT) for wound care in a specific country are not available. Thus, we analysed the use of MDT in hospitalised patients in Germany. Detailed lists of all hospitalised cases treated with MDT in Germany for the years 2011 to 2016 were provided by the Federal Statistical Office as well as the lists of the 15 most frequent principal and additional diagnoses, respectively, and the 10 most frequent procedures documented with MDT in 2016. “…1,3,7,8,16,19 There were reports of good wound healing after use of MDT in several off-label indications such as palliative malignant wound and ischemic wound. 4,17,20 Meanwhile, the contraindications of MDT are allergy, infected wound causing severe sepsis requiring emergent debridement, exposed large blood vessels, sterile body cavity, and entomophobia. 3,7,8 Critical limb ischemia (Ankle Brachial Systolic Index < 0.6) is a relative contraindication to MDT.…”
