This study presents a systematic review to assess the main similarities and gaps in efforts to evaluate the impacts of heavy metals on benthic marine seaweeds. A total of 91 studies were compiled, the main parameters (abiotic, biological, ecotoxicological, and heavy metals) and descriptors of which were evaluated by quantitative and qualitative analyses. Our results indicate the importance of diversifying searches by including different languages (i.e. English, Portuguese and Spanish). Most of the studies were field characterizations, with few abiotic parameters and/or seasonality evaluations being employed. In contrast, the assessment of ecotoxicological parameters was highly frequent, which seems incoherent considering the absence of data to support the use of these results in biomonitoring applications. The genera Sargassum, Ulva and Enteromorpha were widely studied worldwide, apart from a small fraction of studies assessing higher levels of biological organization. Moreover, the use of different parameters and descriptors by the evaluated studies precludes making conclusive or reliable comparisons. These findings highlight the importance of greater efforts to construct a concise baseline of knowledge using similar parameters so that global evaluations of the impacts of heavy metals on photosynthetic organisms can be undertaken.

Kepulauan Spermonde, Makassar Sulawesi Selatan terdiri dari ratusan pulau kecil dengan karakteristik yang bervariasi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis hubungan antara kondisi lingkungan dan aktivitas manusia di pulau dengan kualitas ekosistem perairan pantai berdasarkan parameter fisika-kimia air serta keragaman biodiversitas khususnya Makroalga dan Echinodermata. Penelitian ex post facto ini dilakukan di Pulau Barrangcaddi, Badi, Barang Lompo, Bonebatang dan Pulau Kodingarengkeke. Pemantauan kondisi lingkungan menggunakan indeks Naturalness sedangkan aktivitas manusia menggunakan indeks Hemeroby. Pengambilan sampel air, Makroalga, dan Echinodermata di setiap pulau dilakukan di dua hingga tiga stasiun dengan membuat tiga (3) transek sabuk. Hasil analisis pemodelan persamaan struktural menggunakan WarpPLS (Partial Least Square) menunjukkan bahwa aktivitas manusia yang ada di Kepulauan Spermonde telah berdampak pada pencemaran bahan organik dengan kadar Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) berkisar 25,39-29,81 mg/L. Pencemaran ini selanjutnya telah memicu terjadinya eutrofikasi perairan tercermin dari kadar nitrat yang telah melebihi baku mutu untuk biota perairan (0,05-0,168 mg/L). Eutrofikasi yang terjadi telah meningkatkan diversitas Makroalga dan selanjutnya menurunkan diversitas Echinodermata. Nilai indeks diversitas Makroalga perairan pantai di sekitar lima pulau yang diamati termasuk dalam kategori rendah sampai sedang (1,17-2,42). Nilai indeks diversitas Echinodermata termasuk kategori rendah (0,36-0,88). Parameter kualitas air lain terutama pH, suhu, salinitas, kekeruhan, total fosfat (TP), H2S, minyak dan lemak, dan timbal (Pb) telah memenuhi standar kualitas air untuk kebutuhan biota perairan berdasarkan Keputusan Menteri Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia No. 51/2004.

The Mediterranean basin is amongst the world’s main tourist destination, and its islands are a major attraction, being sites of historical, cultural and naturalistic importance. This is beneficial for the local economies, but it may also represent a great burden on the coastal environment, where other human pressures are concentrated. The awareness of detrimental side effects of tourism together with the importance to take into account social and economic facets has led to the concept of sustainable tourism, which, however, represents a goal far from being attained. A good opportunity to promote sustainable tourism was provided by the Interreg MED BLUEISLANDS project, whose main aim was to identify, address and mitigate the effects of the seasonal variation of waste generated by tourism on Mediterranean islands. Here, we present the methodological framework of the project aimed at biomonitoring coastal seawater in highly touristic sites using macroalgae as valuable bioindicators of seawater quality and improving its status through the implementation and assessment of mitigation measures that included also the involvement of stakeholders. Outcomes of the project highlighted the effectiveness of such an integrated approach, confirming the importance of choosing proper indicators and tools that can support the development of management plans aiming to mitigate environmental impact and foster sustainable tourism.
