Use of Lignocaine in Treatment of Cardiac Arrhythmias

Abstract: Oral Lichen Planus-awson MWDi 'ICSoui 89 In 30 patients with oral lichen planus regarded as severe enough to justify treatment, use of betamethasone (Betnovate) pellets 0.1 mg. was followed by substantial improvement or complete clearance of oral lesions in 20. Seven patients showed gradual or incomplete improvement.Only 2 out of 30 patients failed to show any response to betamethasone, but treatment was not continued for more than one month in these cases. Of two patients with mucous membrane pemphigo… Show more

“…if given by intramuscular injection. It has no effect upon sinus tachycardia and atrial fibrillation, and it should not be used in flutter where it accelerates AV conduction and removes the block (Spracklen et al, 1968). Given the minimal side-effects, it may become the elective prophylactic drug to inject at the bedside early in cardiac infarction, except in bradycardia when i.v.…”

“…If this is less than 0 7, complicating ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation is highly probable. Arrhythmias arising one to three weeks after the original infarct are due to renewed infarction (Spracklen, Besterman, and Litchfield, 1968). Tendency to ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation more often arises in posterior or basal infarct caused by occlusion of the right coronary artery which supplies almost always the AV node and, in half the cases, the sinus node as well.…”

“…• Lidocaine is used widely in acute myocardial infarction for both the prevention and the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). Although its effectiveness in curtailing such arrhythmias is clear, the mechanism of its antiarrhythmic properties is still uncertain.…”

“…Lignocaine is thought to be the drug of choice since it causes less depression of myocardial contractility than procainamide (Harrison, Sprouse, and Morrow, 1963). Our experience of single injections and prolonged administration of lignocaine has confirmed that it is relatively innocuous, but it is not so uniformly successful in suppressing ventricular ectopic beats as might be thought (Gianelly et al, 1967;Spracklen et al, 1968). It caused considerable depression of the cardiac output in 2 patients whose outputs were already low.…”
