Use of ground‐penetrating radar for 3-D sedimentological characterization of clastic reservoir analogs

Abstract: Clastic reservoir analogs based on 2-D outcrop studies provide valuable definitions of geometric and petrophysical heterogeneities at interwell scales. Integration of 3-D ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys with sedimentological and stratigraphic data provides information on the internal heterogeneities of sedimentary sequences at scales that allow dissection of the 3-D anatomy of clastic depositional systems. Two 3-D GPR data volumes were acquired in the Ferron sandstone of east-central Utah. The data show… Show more

“…GPR represents an inexpensive and fast reconnaissance technique with high resolution of the shallow subsurface. GPR has been established as a standard too for the examination of siliciclastic sediments and rocks (e.g., Huggenberger et al 1994;Stephens 1994;Bristow 1995;Asprion and Aigner 1997;McMechan et al 1997;Corbeanu et al 2001;Buynevich and Fitzgerald 2003). In contrast, the application to carbonate rocks still is far from routine.…”

“…In Figure 8 the image of the resistivity distribution in the blocks m6 and m7 is presented in greyscale form. In order to present the GPR data in a comparable form, time slicing was performed in the radar data of the same area (Goodman et al, 1995;Malagodi et al, 1996;Daniels et al, 1997;McMechan et al, 1997). The radargrams were first processed along the baselines described in an earlier paragraph.…”
