Use of Frequency Oscillations to Improve Event Location Estimation in Power Systems

Abstract: Disturbance location information in power system is critical information to power system operator. Fast and accurate event location estimation may help operators respond promptly to restore the system to a normal operating condition. With the help of the Internet based real-time, GPS synchronized, wide-area frequency monitoring network (FNET) , Virginia Tech has patented and implemented the event location estimation approach based on the previous study of the electromechanical wave propagation in power systems… Show more

“…In other words, the site oscillation amplitude is not closely related to the distance from the perturbation place but the mode observability. The traditional viewpoint "the closer to the perturbation place, the greater the oscillation amplitude" [16] is not absolute.…”

“…The wide area measurement system constructed by the phasor measurement unit (PMU), provides support for the online monitoring and security assessment of power system. FNET has achieved similar functions of widearea frequency gathering on the user side, online automatic detecting and alarming events [6][7][8], but frequency deviation security assessment is not involved. Two different quantitative assessment methods have been proposed for transient frequency deviation security assessment in [9] and [10], which laid a theoretical foundation for online frequency security assessment.…”
