Use of fluorescence to visualize response to iloprost treatment for frostbite

Abstract: tab-related-content). We used intravenous indocyanine green fluorescence, a water-soluble dye, for baseline visual microvascular assessment and to assess treatment response. We started iloprost 0.2 µg/mL at 10 mL/h and increased it to 50 mL/h for 6 hours daily for 5 days. We captured fluorescence images before iloprost treatment (Figure 1A) and immediately after the first 6-hour infusion (Figure 1B); microvascular perfusion to the affected toe improved. He tolerated treatment well and did not require amputatio… Show more

“…Some studies graded the injuries clinically (visual grading), while others used imaging (angiography or bone scan) to grade severity. MacLennan et al used intravenous indocyanine green fluorescence to visualise microvasculature and assess iloprost treatment response [ 53 ]. This raises the issue of grading clinically versus using imaging studies such as angiography, nuclear medicine or fluorescence, especially in resource-limited settings.…”

“…Another was of a perforated duodenal ulcer in a patient who was also taking ibuprofen without gastric protection. A further case report describes the use of fluorescence to visualise response to iloprost treatment [ 25 ]. The patient presented 8 h after initial injury with grade 2 frostbite.…”
