Use of FAO food balance sheets to estimate the potential ability of novel folate-enriched eggs to increase the folate supply in European Union countries

Abstract: Objective: European governments have yet to introduce mandatory folic acid fortification of foods for neural tube defect prevention because of uncertainty about the long-term safety of high intake of folic acid. Novel folate-enriched eggs have been proposed as offering a practical way of increasing intake of natural folates, which do not have the same safety concerns as synthetic folic acid. Our objective was to estimate the potential increase in folate supply that could occur in European Union (EU) countries … Show more

“…Others use randomised dietary intervention where human subjects are provided with key foods or all foods (26) . Yet others rely on self-reported food and beverage intake in household budget surveys (27) , national statistics on basic food ingredients (sweeteners and oils) and primary (unprocessed) foods reported in FBS, or both (28)(29)(30)(31)(32)(33) . Studies that examine the environmental consequences of the Western diet also rely largely on national statistics like FBS (34)(35)(36)(37)(38)(39) .…”

“…Food balance sheets, which describe production, imports and exports for commodities for each country in relation to population size, are published annually for each country by FAO yet are rarely used in nutrition research. Sheehy and Sharma (18) show how this information can be used to estimate the impact of fortification of specific foods on population nutrient intake. With increasing concern about national and global food security, FAO data may be increasingly useful for population research.…”
