A indústria da construção civil utiliza abundante matéria-prima não renovável, consome grande quantidade de energia na extração de insumos, na produção dos materiais, no transporte de ambos e gera uma infinidade de entulho na execução das obras. Tijolos ecológicos podem ser fabricados utilizando resíduos urbanos atóxicos, incluindo os da construção civil. Este trabalho objetivou descrever o processo de fabricação e a caracterização estrutural de tijolos ecológicos utilizando como matriz o argissolo e o latossolo, e como aglomerante, materiais recicláveis da coleta seletiva urbana (PET e EPS), reboco descartado pela construção civil e a vinhaça da indústria canavieira. Foram realizados estudos do processo de fabricação de protótipos de tijolos ecológicos e da caracterização mecânica: absorção de água, densidade seca, resistência à compressão mecânica, comportamento tensão/deformação, comportamento massa/resistência à compressão. Os resultados mostraram que a inclusão acima de excessiva de materiais recicláveis na fabricação dos adobes promove o aumento da resistência mecânica, mas também aumenta a absorção de água de forma a não atender a regulamentação da norma brasileira que dispõe sobre o tijolo maciço de solo-cimento. Os tijolos mais promissores foram os fabricados com 55 e 39,5 % de materiais recicláveis para o argissolo e o latossolo respectivamente.

Concrete, one of the sources of energy consumption and carbon emissions, is widely used in the construction industry. The selection of concrete materials raises the question of energy sustainability and turns it into a complex multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) issue. To address this, we present an MCDM framework based on the intuitionistic linguistic hybrid weighted logarithmic averaging distance (ILHWLAD). To begin with, the intuitionistic linguistic numbers are used to deal with the uncertainty and fuzziness of the decision-making process. In addition, in view of the significance and the ordered position of the input arguments, an intuitionistic linguistic hybrid weighted logarithmic averaging distance (ILHWLAD) operator is defined. We, then, initiate the criteria system and present the MCDM framework based on the ILHWLAD to select the finest concrete. A case study involving four alternative materials, namely, autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), hollow concrete blocks (HCB), expanded polystyrene (EPS), and lime hemp concrete (LHC), is presented to verify the scientificity of the framework.

This paper studies the effects of using 20, 40 and 60% vol. of either expanded polystyrene (EPS) or olive stones as additives in the manufacture of handmade bricks. The bricks were made using clayey earth from Viznar (Spain) and were fired at 950 °C. The effects of the additives on the mineralogical, textural and physical properties of the fired bricks were analysed, focusing mainly on possible changes in their pore system, thermal insulation, compressive strength, colour and salt crystallisation resistance. From a mineralogical point of view, the bricks made with olive stones had a lighter red colour due to their lower hematite content. As expected, the samples made with these additives had greater porosity and better thermal insulation. However, they also had lower compressive strength to the point that the only samples that met the recommended criteria for general construction work were those with 20% vol. EPS, while those with 40% vol. EPS met the criteria to be used as lightweight bricks. Both additives improved the resistance of the bricks to decay by salt crystallisation.
