Use of dried distiller’s grains with solubles for swine diets (2003)

Abstract: A large increase in the number of ethanol plants has lead to increased availability of dried distiller’s grains with solubles (DDGS). New plants also have improved processing techniques, which makes DDGS more attractive to use in swine diets. Two experiments were conducted to determine the energy value of DDGS. In Experiment 1, 360 pigs (each initially 38.5 lb) were used in a 22 d growth assay. Treatments consisted of five corn-soybean meal-based diets with added wheat bran or soy oil to provide five differe… Show more

“…The mean ME values of LS-DDG and DDGS determined in this study were 2,959 ± 100.2 kcal/kg of DM (91.5% of DE) and 2,964 ± 81.3 (1998) and similar to those reported by Soares et al (2008). However, the DE and ME values determined for DDGS in this study were less than the values reported by Pedersen et al (2007) and Hastad et al (2004). Similarly, the DE and ME values determined for DDGS in this study were less than calculated values presented by the University of Minnesota (2008) using the prediction equations of Noblet and Perez (1993).…”

“…However, based on the chemical composition of many samples, values for DE and ME in DDGS of approximately 3,990 and 3,750 kcal/kg of DM, respectively, have been calculated (Spiehs et al, 2002). In experiments by Hastad et al (2004) and Stein et al (2005), ME values of approximately 3,900 and 3,400 kcal/kg of DM, respectively, were measured. Therefore, there is evidence that DE and ME in DDGS are greater than the values currently suggested by the NRC (1998).…”

“…Os pesquisadores que observaram redução no desempenho dos animais atribuíram o resultado a baixa qualidade do DDGS usado, ou seja, a menor utilização de nutrientes e a redução na palatabilidade do DDGS, pois quando os suínos podem escolher, eles têm preferência pela dieta sem DDGS (HASTAD et al, 2004).…”
