The natural resource based view (NRBV) of organisations suggests that there are two main models used by businesses to achieve short-term sustainability outcomes. They are the product stewardship and pollution prevention models. Here is the case of a New York-based wholesaler of medical supplies. The business aims to develop a more environmentally sustainable supply chain for one of its products -an emesis basin. The emesis basin is currently only offered in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic, which has negative effects on the natural environment. This study aimed to assess how the focus of the business' new business model might affect the overall life cycle impacts of this product. To achieve this, we compared the environmental impacts of the conventional product (Scenario 1-an HDPE basin) with equivalent products supplied via pollution prevention (Scenario 2 -a bioplastic basin) and product stewardship (Scenario 3 -green supply chain management and improvements) scenarios, as well as a combination scenario (Scenario 4). The results show that, in line with expectations, the pollution prevention option -switching to a bioplastic product -has the lowest environmental impacts. Unexpectedly though, the product stewardship option had a greater impact on the natural environment than the conventional HDPE, business-as-usual option. We suggest there may greater environmental gains to be obtained by focusing on one's core business, than by extending influence to the entire supply chain. Integrated optimization model and methodology for plastics recycling: Indian empirical evidence AbstractWe develop a decision model to integrate three decisions pertaining to location, allocation, and routing of different varieties of recycled plastics. Our decision model allocates recycling collection points to the available centralized return center based on its capacity and ensures similar allocation to all facilities via optimal routing for trucks. The study addresses several pertinent questions such as how to deal with higher collection cost, how to develop a model that jointly considers operational cost reduction along with the achievement of higher environmental benefits, how to reduce sub optimization which is quite common when using standalone decision models, and what are the feasible ways to increase the utilization of collection facilities. We validate the model using data retrieved from a case study in India using a conventional decomposed modelling approach. Our findings demonstrate that the proposed integrated model reduces over ten percent of total recycling costs for both single and multiple products. The results also suggest managers to reduce variances in product quality levels in order to achieve substantial total costs reduction. In addition, to increase the plastic recycling returns and reduce the operational cost, managers need to cluster the customers based on the facility location and offer attractive incentives.

Resumo Analisou-se o desempenho físico-mecânico de placas e pavers com incorporação de rejeitos da coleta seletiva do município de Blumenau, SC. Tais rejeitos são compostos de orgânicos, polímeros, papéis, vidro e têxteis, que foram reduzidos de tamanho (2,4 mm a 19,0 mm) e substituíram o agregado miúdo natural nos percentuais de 5%, 10%, 20% e 30%. Para o compósito no estado fresco verificou-se o índice de consistência, e no estado endurecido determinaram-se massa específica aparente, absorção de água e resistência à compressão. As placas foram submetidas ao ensaio de resistência à flexão e à análise de microscopia eletrônica de varredura. A massa específica aparente das placas variou de 0,8 a 1,6 g.cm-3, e dos pavers, de 1,78 a 1,84 g.cm-3. Para menores quantidades de rejeitos incorporados, os dois materiais apresentaram índices de absorção de água que satisfazem as exigências de normas correlatas. As placas apresentaram valores de resistência à compressão que variaram de 4,7 MPa a 14,6 MPa. Na flexão, os valores atingidos foram de 0,1 MPa a 1,8 MPa. Os pavers alcançaram valores de resistência à compressão entre 10,8 MPa e 18,7 MPa. Pavers com 5% de incorporação de agregados de rejeitos seriam passíveis de ser aplicáveis em calçadas e meios-fios desde que estudos futuros garantam sua durabilidade.
