Use of data mining in a two‐step process of profiling student preferences in relation to the enhancement of English as a foreign language teaching

Abstract: The paper pursues a twofold goal. The first goal refers to the identification of university students' needs regarding such modifications to English language courses that would improve English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching outcomes. The other goal refers to the methodical issue of achieving the first one. In this aspect, the use of selected data mining techniques in a hierarchical way in real data processing is proposed. These are: (a) Self‐Organizing Map (SOM) dataset segmentation and then (b) market ba… Show more

“…e actual change in SOH is nonlinear and fluctuating, not simply declining, because the number of ELLs [26] increases and the change in student learning outcomes becomes more dramatic, as verified in Figure 3. Because the SOH of ELL cannot be measured directly due to multiple factors, a health factor (HI) [8,27] is needed to characterize the change in SOH. In general, the most intuitive observation of the decline in ELL performance is characterized by a decline in capacity, and it is most accurate to use the change in capacity as a direct HI.…”

“…In English teaching, teachers can evaluate students' English proficiency before teaching, understand their actual needs and language application abilities, and then purposefully cultivate students' objectives when formulating teaching plans to achieve practical application effects. Task based teaching is an implementation method of output oriented teaching method, which is also widely used in English teaching [19][20]. Task based teaching integrates listening, speaking, reading, writing, communication, and thinking in the teaching process, focusing on students' language application abilities in practical tasks.…”

“…A survey with different users on the MOOC platform was used to determine the intention of using the model. The result was significantly influenced by perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and user satisfaction based on academic performance ( Cui and Ma, 2020 ; Nowakowska et al, 2020 ).…”
