Prevalence of C-shaped root canal in a Brazilian subpopulation: a cone-beam computed tomography analysis Abstract: The aim of this study was to use cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images to evaluate the prevalence and configurations of Cshaped canals in permanent mandibular second molars among members of a Brazilian subpopulation. CBCT exams of 214 patients (406 teeth) were evaluated for: presence of C-shaped root canals, number of canals and direction of the root grooves (buccal or lingual). Of the 214 CBCT images examined, 192 showed intact bilateral molars, which were used to analyze the distribution of unilateral and bilateral occurrences of Cshaped canals. The prevalence of these canals was correlated with gender and age, and the number of canals was correlated with the direction of the root grooves using the chi-squared test (α = 0.05). The prevalence of C-shaped canals was 15.3%. This prevalence did not differ with gender or age. Most of the C-shaped molars had three (43.5%) or two (37.1%) canals; 69.4% of the C-shaped canals were grooved in the buccal direction; 68.3% of the C-shaped cases were unilateral. In conclusion, there was a significant prevalence of C-shaped canals in the mandibular second molars of the population studied; the C-shaped canal system varied in configuration, with a higher prevalence of three and two canals and unilateral occurrence; CBCT is a useful tool for endodontic diagnosis and treatment.

Aim: C-shaped canal system is a seldom-found root canal anatomy which displays a challenge in all stages of endodontic treatment. According to the literature, this type of canal morphology is not a common finding in the mandibular first molar teeth.Background: This case report presents endodontic management of a mandibular first molar with a C-shaped canal system.Case report: Root canal system was cleaned and shaped by nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments combined with selfadjusting file (SAF). Obturation was performed using warm, vertical condensation combined with the injection of warm gutta-percha. Follow-up examination 12 months later showed that the tooth was asymptomatic. The radiological findings presented no signs of periapical pathology. Clinical significance:The clinician must be aware of the occurence and complexity of C-shaped canals in mandibular first molar teeth to perform a successful root canal treatment. The supplementary use of SAF after application of rotary instruments in C-shaped root canals might be a promising approach in endodontic treatment of this type of canal morphology.

<b>Morphological Variations of the Root Canal System in C-shaped Roots of the Mandibular Second Molar in a Japanese Population </b>

Morphological variations of the root canal system of C-shaped roots in mandibular second molars of young Japanese patients (aged 20 to 29 years old) were analyzed by using multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) in order to clarify the entire picture from the orifice to the apex. CT images were reconstructed so that the axial image was inclined perpendicular to the long axis of teeth. C-shaped roots were more frequently found in females (54.0%) than in males (36.7%) (p<0.01). One root canal was most frequently found on the coronal side, and the root canal numbers increased to the apex. Thus, in many cases at the coronal level the canal formed letterC , but it ramified into increasingly smaller canals towards the apex. The complex configuration of the root canals may be related to various degree of fusion in the roots. The results of this study might be used for understanding the nature of C-shaped root canals.
