Smart energy systems (SES) promote the transformation of the distribution grid towards more sustainable operation and planning strategies, but also impose a set of considerable technological and political challenges. In this, distribution system operators (DSOs) are faced with the necessity of adapting their information system landscapes to enable the efficient utilization of information within their internal structures. In this work, we propose a model-based approach to derive an open middleware platform supporting the integration of existing system landscapes of DSOs. For this, we shortly describe a domain analysis on the DSO domain, which we use to derive the requirements of our platform. The platform is then implemented utilizing the Common Information Model (CIM) and open standards. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach within a small case study for a single use-case.

A Cosimulation Architecture for Power System, Communication, and Market in the Smart Grid

Smart grids evolve rapidly towards a system that includes components from different domains, which makes interdisciplinary modelling and analysis indispensable. In this paper, we present a cosimulation architecture for smart grids together with a comprehensive data model for the holistic representation of the power system, the communication network, and the energy market. Cosimulation is preferred over a monolithic approach since it allows leveraging the capabilities of existing, well-established domainspecific software. The challenges that arise in a multidomain smart grid cosimulation are identified for typical use cases through a discussion of the recent literature. Based on the identified requirements and use cases, a joint representation of the smart grid ecosystem is facilitated by a comprehensive data model. The proposed data model is then integrated in a software architecture, where the domain-specific simulators for the power grid, the communication network, and the market mechanisms are combined in a cosimulation framework. The details of the software architecture and its implementation are presented. Finally, the implemented framework is used for the cosimulation of a virtual power plant, where battery storages are controlled by a novel peak-shaving algorithm, and the battery storages and the market entity are interfaced through a communication network.

The recent handling over of the assets of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) successor companies to the core investors was a major landmark in the reform of the electric power sector in Nigeria. However, the emergence of the different autonomous utilities for running the deregulated electricity market has great consequent for the day-to-day planning and operation of the power grid. There is need to exchange information and data between applications of the entities not only to guarantee the security and efficient operation of the power grid, but also for settlement purposes. This paper proposes a Web-services-based architecture for information integration between applications of the autonomous entities in deregulated electricity market. Loosely coupled feature of Web services provides more flexible and reliable way to integrate information in heterogeneous environments resulting from the unbundled vertically integrated national grid in Nigeria.
