Use of Chemical Fingerprinting to Establish the Presence of Spilled Crude Oil in a Residential Area Following Hurricane Katrina, St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana

Abstract: Hurricane Katrina's storm surge displaced and damaged a 250,000 barrel storage tank causing a Nigerian crude oil blend (API 36.4 degrees) to be released and dispersed into the adjacent evacuated residential area by the retreating floodwaters. The subsequent environmental assessment involved sampling and chemical fingerprinting of nearly 15,000 wipe and soil samples collected both inside and outside of buildings to determine which properties were impacted by the spilled crude oil. Tier 1 qualitative analysis of… Show more

“…With this setting, it is an area vulnerable to hurricane and winter storm surges. While hurricanes can cause severe damages as we have witnessed in recent years by Hurricanes Katrina (e.g., Pardue et al, 2005;Adams et al, 2007;Stout et al, 2007;Suedel et al, 2007), Rita (e.g., Rego & Li, 2009a, b, 2010a, Gustav, and Ike (Li et al, 2009, the effect of winter storms (cold fronts) cannot be neglected because of the much higher frequency of occurrence and its cumulative effects (e.g., Roberts et al, 1987;Moeller, et al, 1993;Walker & Hammack, 2000;Pepper & Stone, 2004;Feng & Li, 2010). The hydrodynamics can significantly influence the sediment transport (e.g., Cundy et al, 2007) and wetland stability (e.g., Valdemoro et al, 2007).…”

“…Numerous studies have been conducted on contaminant concentrations and toxicity measurements in New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain immediately following the hurricane (Presley et al 2006;Cobb et al 2006;Van Metre et al 2006;Adams et al 2007;Stout et al 2007;Liebl et al 2008;Shi et al 2010;Abel et al 2010). In general, concentrations of organic contaminants (such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyls) decreased in the months following the storm, although few concentrations were detected above the EPA's Human Health Medium Specific Screening Levels (Van Metre et al 2006;Liebl et al 2008).…”
