Use of autologous bone marrow stem cell implantation for osteonecrosis of the knee in sickle cell disease: a preliminary report

Abstract: BackgroundThe purpose of our study was to evaluate safety, feasibility and clinical results of bone marrow mononuclear cell (BMC) implantation for early-stage osteonecrosis of the knee (OK) secondary to sickle cell disease.MethodsThirty-three SCD patients (45 knees) with OK treated with BMC implantation in the osteonecrotic lesion were clinically and functionally evaluated through the American Knee Society Clinical Score (KSS), Knee Functional Score (KFS) and Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) pain score. MRI and radi… Show more

“…In our study, further corroborating findings from important literature sources (Daltro et al, 2008;Hernigou et al, 2008;Daltro et al, 2015;Daltro et al, 2018b), nearly 70% of cases stabilized, meaning there was no disease progression, which is very important for these patients, especially considering their young age. Thus, we were able to postpone the need for prosthesis for approximately 10 years (Hernigou and Beaujean, 2002).…”

“…It further explains that approximately 20% of Knee joint replacement patients experience loss of function in the next 12 months of procedure. The report [6] elaborates the significance of implementing ADSC therapy techniques for SCD (Sickle cell disease) patients to overcome knee OA [6]. It was seen that procedure was safe and feasible and moreover the results were satisfactory.…”
