Use of artificial intelligence in dermatology

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a major frontier in computer science research. Although AI has been available for some time and found its application in many fields of medicine, its use in dermatology is comparatively new and limited. A sound understanding of the concepts of AI is essential for dermatologists as skin conditions with their abundant clinical and dermatoscopic data and images can potentially be the next big thing in the application of AI in medicine. There are already a number of arti… Show more

“…It is a branch of computer science that deals with simulation of intelligent human behavior in computers. 50,51 Dermatology has taken a leading position in artificial intelligence implementation due to its large clinical, dermoscopic, and histopathological image database. Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence, where the computer learns by creating various algorithms to solve problems and an output is generated.…”

“…Contemporary ML algorithms have demonstrated functional capacity to equal that of human for tasks of image recognition and at times have even exceeded it 26. This has motivated clinical application of this technology with ML algorithms being developed to automate numerous medical tasks, such as the reading of ECGs, the interpretation of radiological images and the diagnosis of skin lesions 28 33 34. The aim of this manuscript is to perform a comprehensive literature review and evaluate the potential application of such ML algorithm for the diagnosis of ear disease from otoscopic image analysis.…”
