Use of an Italian version of the telephone interview for cognitive status in Alzheimer's disease

Abstract: The I-TICS is a valid instrument in clinical and research screening and monitoring of AD. Potential applications in other dementias and MCI are worth further studies.

“…Cholinergic systems have been implicated in several important brain functions, including cortical arousal, sleep-wake cycles, visual information processing, learning, memory, and other cognitive functions. Alzheimer's disease has also been associated at least in part with the loss of cortical cholinergic innervation (Dal Forno et al 2006;Ferreri et al 2003Ferreri et al , 2011bSquitti et al 2007) and SAI abnormalities (Di Lazzaro et al 2005a) and therefore detailed information about the effects of cholinergic innervation on the functioning of cortical circuits is needed if we are to understand the cellular mechanisms underlying the behavioral and cognitive symptoms encountered in that disease.…”

“…Cognitive impairment was examined primarily by means of a telephone version of the MMSE [22] . Although telephone interviews for measuring cognitive status are now frequently being used in studies of the elderly and have proved reliable and valid in this context [22,37,38] , the conditions of the telephone survey deviate from those at the baseline examination and thus may limit the comparability of the cognitive performance over time. In addition, cognitive impairment was represented in the follow-up by different criteria.…”

“…Dies hat Vorteile in der Verlaufsbeobachtung von Personen mit sehr guter kognitiver Fähigkeit, aber auch in der statistischen Behandlung aggregierter Daten. Die vielfach beschriebene enge Korrelation zwischen MMST und modifizierter Fassung des TICS [5,17] …”
