Background: In our clinical experience, people with Parkinson's disease (PwP) and their caregivers have difficulty understanding the complexities of the disease, which has a multitude of symptoms and involved therapies. We undertook a needs assessment to understand the need for, and to guide the development of, an educational tool. Methods: We invited PwP, caregivers and health care providers (HCP) from across Canada to participate in an online survey to determine the need and desired content for such a tool. Results: Respondents included 450 PwP, 335 caregivers, and 96 HCP from across Canada. 86.5% of HCP reported that it was "very important" for patients to understand issues in PD and 84.4% would use a visual aid to explain these issues. Results showed that 81.9-95.7% of caregivers and PwP were not "very satisfied" with the explanations of all domains in PD. Non-motor symptoms and cognitive issues were highly ranked by all groups as difficult to understand or explain. Older PwP (those with PD for less than 5 years and those who reported that their HCP spent less than 15 minutes counselling in each clinic visit) were less likely to fully understand and be satisfied with the explanations of most issues in PD. Interpretation: There is a need for better patient education when discussing PD issues in the clinical setting. Older PwP that have been recently diagnosed have the greatest educational needs. Potential users indicate that a visual aid would help and non-motor symptoms, particularly cognitive issues, need to be a focus of such a tool.Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex condition associated with many symptoms that is managed by a range of medical and surgical treatments. After the initial diagnosis is established, educating patients with regard to their disease is typically the next step. Patient perceived "satisfaction with the explanation of the condition at diagnosis" has a significant association with health related quality of life.1 The capacity of the health care provider (HCP) to explain PD is an important determinant in the success of such a discussion. Graphic organizers are popular tools which support meaningful learning. The aim of this study was to compare the learning outcomes of two educational scenarios involving the use of learner-generated or authorprovided flow diagrams. Thirty-six third to fifth year medical students worked in pairs in the ' Bit Pathways ' computer-aided learning environment. The group using author-provided graphic organizers performed significantly better on a knowledge retention test 1 month after the learning activity, requiring less preparatory time than the group generating their own graphic organizers (Cohen ' s d effect size = 0.84, p = 0.03). Students liked both learning activities; however, the preference for learningby-viewing was clear. Students ' quality of flow diagrams were correlated positively with the outcomes of the knowledge post-test (Spearman ' s R = 0.75, p = 0.03). The generally poor quality of learner-generated diagrams indicated that better guided instructional designs for the learning-bydoing scenario are needed. This paper outlines further development directions of both tested scenarios.

Objective:Medical students as future doctors will play an important role in caring for HIV-infected patients. This study assessed and evaluated the existing level of knowledge of MBBS students about HIV/AIDS given through lecture delivery methods and by use of concept map (CM).Materials and Methods:This study was carried out on 150 professional MBBS students of tertiary care hospital. A pretest was conducted by giving 10 multiple choice questions (MCQ) of general awareness and 15 questions regarding pharmacotherapy of HIV/AIDS. In between pre- and post-test, a session of 1-week integrated teaching module was organized. After completion of integrated teaching, 2 h session of CM on general awareness and pharmacotherapy of HIV/AIDS was taken. A posttest was conducted using MCQs and problem-based question (PBQ) to assess the effect of integrated teaching and CM on their knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Feedback was also taken from the students to regarding their views about CM.Results:There was a significant increase in student’s score in MCQ test after integrated teaching than pretest (P < 0.05). There was also significant improvement in PBQ score after CM than that of after integrated teaching (P < 0.05). Students’ perception about the effectiveness of CM was positive.Conclusion:CM can make a significant improvement in the knowledge of medical students and were motivated and developed interest in the subject.
