Use of albendazole sulfoxide, albendazole sulfone, and combined solutions as scolicidal agents on hydatid cysts (in vitro study)

Abstract: Despite being active, ABZ metabolites did not provide a marked advantage over 20% hypertonic saline. According to these results, we think creating a newly improved and more active preparation is necessary for hydatid cyst treatment.

“…Cyst rupture can cause anaphylactic shock or may release a large number of viable scoleces that implant elsewhere and produce secondary cysts [30]. Albendazole sulfoxide, albendazole sulfone and combined albendazole sulfoxide and albendazole sulfone mixed together in concentrations of 50 μg/ml of 4%, NaCl 20%, and 1.5% cetrimide -0.15% chlorhexidine (10%) did not provide a marked result as scolicidal agents [31].…”

“…10 µg/ml of albendazole solution is enough to completely kill scolices in vitro and the optimal concentration of albendazole for percutaneous injection and drainage is 1.7 µg/ml. This solution has been shown to be effective for treatment in both experimental and clinical studies (Paksoy et al, 2005;Yetim et al, 2005;Adaş et al, 2009). In the present study, we injected scolicidal agent directly into the common bile duct.…”

“…The restructuring of the drugs to yield the best formulation can be attempted. Since for no ideal scolicidal agents have been presented (43). In vivo studies have considered the efficacy of albendazole-based combination therapy against echinococcosis.…”
