Use of a single implant to retain mandibular overdenture: A preliminary clinical trial of 13 cases

Abstract: Background/purpose: Given that many patients find the cost of mandibular rehabilitation through complete overdenture implants to be beyond their financial scope, many seek a more affordable treatment. The aims of this study were to compare the clinical outcomes of single mandibular implant-retained overdentures versus that of complete dentures. Materials and methods: Thirteen edentulous patients with a mean age of 71 years were enrolled in this investigation. They were treated with a single implant inserted in… Show more

“…This supports the argument that the implant overdenture produced a significant patient satisfaction than a conventional complete denture regardless the implant number whether one or two implants. [14,21,22] The explanation for this is that the implant improves retention, stability, and masticatory performance to a large extent which seems to be logic and in accordance with most previous studies that done on this subject. [13,[23][24][25][26][27][28] Between the groups, at baseline and at 3-month follow-up periods, the difference in the patient satisfaction between single and two implant groups was not significant which was compatible with the result of many previous studies.…”

“…The data extracted from the publications included were analysed and stratified based on the following (Table ). The SIROD treatment was primarily indicated in edentulous patients with atrophic mandibles, complaining of compromised retention and stability of the mandibular dentures . A minimum ridge height of 10 mm and width of 4 mm was considered adequate to allow for placement of the symphyseal implant .…”

“…Patients in good general health conditions are best candidates for implant therapy, however since single implant-assisted overdenture is a simplified and less invasive approach, it is a more feasible option for older and/or debilitated patients who have health restrictions or systemic conditions that increase the risk of extensive implant surgical procedures. If any systemic condition or disease is present, like diabetes or hypertension, it must be controlled and properly managed as part of the treatment planning and during the surgical interventions 20,21 .…”
