BackgroundLichen planus (LP) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the oral mucosa as well as the skin, genital mucosa and other sites. Objective: to evaluate the correlation between oral, genital and cutaneous lichen planus, in a sample of LP patients.Material and MethodsThis descriptive study reviewed 274 clinical histories of patients, who all presented histological confirmation of lichen planus verified by a pathologist, attending research centers in Barcelona.ResultsA total of 40 LP patients (14.59%) presented genital lesions. Of 131 patients with cutaneous LP (47.8%), the most commonly affected zones were the body’s flexor surfaces, representing 60.1% of cases. 24% of patients (n=55) related the start of the lesions with previous stress events. Of the 131 subjects with cutaneous lesions, 19% (n=25) also presented oral lichen planus (OLP). Of the total sample, 53.6% (n=147) of patients presented oral lesions. The systemic diseases most commonly associated with this patient sample were psychological problems such as stress, anxiety and depression (48%), hypertension (27%), gastric problems (12%), and diabetes (9.7%). A family history of lichen planus was found in only 2 cases (0,72%) out of the total of 274.ConclusionsAny patient with OLP should undergo a thorough history and examination to investigate potential extraoral manifestations. The fact that 37 patients with OLP in this series were identified with simultaneous involvement at more than one site highlights the need for exhaustive evaluation and multidisciplinary approaches to this disease. Visual pedagogy has emerged as a new approach in improving dental care in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). This paper aimed to evaluate and assess the scientific evidence on the use of visual pedagogy in improving oral hygiene skills and cooperation during dental care in children with ASDs. The review protocol was registered on the PROSPERO Register (CRD42020183030). Prospective clinical studies, randomized trials, interruptive case series, before and after comparison studies, and cross-sectional studies following the PRISMA guideline were searched in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar using ad hoc prepared search strings. The search identified 379 papers, of which 342 were excluded after title and abstract evaluation, and 37 full-text papers were analyzed. An additional four papers were added after consulting reference lists. Eighteen papers were disregarded; 23 were finally included, and their potential bias was assessed using ROB-2 and ROBINS-I tools. The wide heterogenicity of the studies included does not allow for conclusive evidence on the effectiveness of visual pedagogy in oral hygiene skills and dental care. Nevertheless, a significant and unilateral tendency of the overall outcomes was found, suggesting that visual pedagogy supports ASD children in improving both oral hygiene skills and cooperation during dental care.

A prevenção é essencial para o estabelecimento de saúde bucal dos pacientes, principalmente quando relacionada aos indivíduos com deficiência, como os pacientes com Síndrome de Down (SD). O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar as percepções de pais e/ou responsáveis sobre a saúde bucal e em seguida formular um manual sobre escovação dentária, além de encontrar recursos lúdicos de manejo comportamental para o paciente com SD. Com os participantes com SD foram realizadas oficinas de arte e outras atividades lúdicas com caráter de educação em saúde. Participaram do estudo 15 pacientes com SD com idade entre 3 e 16 anos, com seus respectivos pais/cuidadores da Associação de Pais e Amigos das Pessoas com SD de Lençóis Paulista - SP (Brasil). Observou-se que ainda grande parte dos pais desconhece quais doenças que acometem a cavidade bucal dos pacientes com SD e como isso afeta sua saúde sistêmica. Constatou-se que os participantes com SD aceitaram e adotaram de maneira mais efetiva as instruções de higiene bucal por meio da música fortalecendo o vínculo paciente-profissional. Portanto, atividades de extensão para essa parcela da população são fundamentais para promoção de saúde bucal, inclusão social e qualidade de vida dos mesmos.
