Use of a Gemini-Surfactant Synthesized from the Mango Seed Oil as a CO2-Corrosion Inhibitor for X-120 Steel

Abstract: A gemini surfactant imidazoline type, namely N-(3-(2-fatty-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-1-yl) propyl) fatty amide, has been obtained from the fatty acids contained in the mango seed and used as a CO2 corrosion inhibitor for API X-120 pipeline steel. Employed techniques involved potentiodynamic polarization curves, linear polarization resistance, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. These tests were supported by detailed scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy studies. It was found that ob… Show more

“…The inhibition efficiencies are higher than those obtained with similar inhibitors obtained from other vegetable oils [ 17 , 19 ] and imidazolines with more than one hydrocarbon chain [ 13 ]. The higher inhibition efficiencies may be due to the presence of unsaturations in the hydrocarbon chains that favor the adsorption of the inhibitor to the metal surface [ 14 , 23 , 24 ].…”

“…Despite their popularity, most of these derivatives also negatively impact the environmental profile. In contrast, natural resources, such as those extracted or modified from plants or agro-industrial waste, for instance, coffee bagasse oil, 12 rice bran oil, 13,14 wasted mango seeds, 15 wasted avocado oil, 16 and Rosa canina fruit, 17 have been used to synthesize corrosion inhibitors and have received great attention due to their non-toxicity, biodegradability, and they have no negative influence on the environment. 18 However, problematic extraction and storage still limit their large-scale commercialization.…”
