Use of a gamified website to increase pain neurophysiology knowledge and improve satisfaction and motivation among students studying for a degree in physiotherapy: a quasi-experimental study

Abstract: Background The scientific evidence highlights the difficulties that healthcare professionals experience when managing patients with chronic pain. One of the causes of this difficulty could be related to the acquired training and the lack of knowledge about the neurophysiology of pain. In the present study, we assessed the effectiveness of a gamified web platform in acquiring knowledge about pain neurophysiology and determining the satisfaction and motivation of students of the Degree in Physiot… Show more

“…In these studies, effective knowledge acquisition within a given time is emphasized in medical education, and gamified methods were applied to motivate learners in this context. For example, [ 47 ] developed a gamified web platform to study its impacts on students’ obtaining knowledge about pain neurophysiology and their satisfaction. The gamified methods in this study included providing individual learning paths and quizzes.…”

“…ICTs have improved planning and success among nursing staff (Nordmark et al, 2022) and have enabled distance training for older adults living alone (Oba et al, 2022). E-Learning methodologies have also been used to acquire knowledge about pain neurophysiology, increasing the learners' motivation after using them (Valenzuela-Pascual et al, 2022). In addition, e-Learning methods have been successful in other disciplines of knowledge, such as animal physiology (e.g., Montrezor, 2021) mathematics (e.g., Valverde-Berrocoso et al, 2022), physics (Nurliani et al, 2021), and precision agriculture (agricultural technology) in the face of climate change (Nugroho et al, 2019).…”

“…Suyanto (2009) also argues that satisfaction is an important thing that must be considered in making a website for the sustainability of the website. The availability of free and simple computer tools for creating or editing audio-visuals makes this type of content a very interesting option (Valenzuela-Pascual et al, 2022)…”
