Usage metrics have become increasingly popular in scientometric with the advent of electronic resources. While most current researches relied on the usage data retrieved from English publishers. In this study, the usage data was extended to Chinese publishers. We collected and analyzed the usage data of six well-known Chinese OA (Open Access) journals in different fields from journals’ official websites and Chinese Academic Journals Full-text Database (CJFD) in China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). It was found that websites’ information architecture affected usage pattern. “Progressive rule”-based site guided users to view full-text articles more than download them and “parallel rule”-based site guided users to download full-text articles more than view them. CNKI proved its popularity in China. Although CNKI is a non-OA platform and has a time delay in indexing full-text articles, but they still attracted a large number of users. PDF tended to be the preferred format than HTML in most journals in the study. Also, CNKI citation were more skewedly distributed than usage data in most journals and it showed strong or moderate correlation between CNKI citation and CNKI full-text downloads in most journals. Finally, it depicted that usage data of most articles was at their peak around pagination month and at the bottom at very earlier or later months.

In the era of digitization and Open Access, article-level metrics are increasingly employed to distinguish influential research works and adjust research management strategies. Tagging individual articles with digital object identifiers allows exposing them to numerous channels of scholarly communication and quantifying related activities. The aim of this article was to overview currently available article-level metrics and highlight their advantages and limitations. Article views and downloads, citations, and social media metrics are increasingly employed by publishers to move away from the dominance and inappropriate use of journal metrics. Quantitative article metrics are complementary to one another and often require qualitative expert evaluations. Expert evaluations may help to avoid manipulations with indiscriminate social media activities that artificially boost altmetrics. Values of article metrics should be interpreted in view of confounders such as patterns of citation and social media activities across countries and academic disciplines.

Past Themes and Tracking Research Trends in Entrepreneurship: A Co-Word, Cites and Usage Count Analysis

This paper examines the evolution of research in Entrepreneurship published in Web of Science, a reference database. A bibliometric content analysis has been carried out as part of this investigation, allowing for a longitudinal study of the main research topics dealt with over time, ranging from classic topics such as its conception to more recent realities that include Social and Sustainable Entrepreneurship. This paper locates research trends by studying the evolution of citations and by incorporating use metrics. The results point to the existence of seven cognitive fronts that have marked the field’s growth and conceptual evolution. Furthermore, evidence is presented that shows how innovation has historically been the thread that links all the core themes. The topics and trends detected contribute specially to advancing the current discussion on entrepreneurship and coordinating future research efforts.
