In this article we report from a case study of a software development organization and we study in particular the developers' and product managers' attitudes towards integrating usability work into software development. We offer explanations based on system justification theory illuminating what would-be integrators might be up against. The analysis shows how the developers only pay lip service to usability work and how they treat users superficially. It further shows how that leads to stereotyping of usability designers and users in order to preserve status quo, and how internalization of inequality between the developers and usability designers rationalizes the preservation of status quo. These findings will have significant implications for managers of software development.• Software developers may claim to adhere to the principles of usability design and evaluation while their practices show the contrary• Usability designers and users may become stereotyped and internalise a perception of inequality.• Developers may cling to status quo and seek to preserve it.• Managers of software development and usability work must pay attention to justification mechanisms to realise the challenges of integration.

A highly debated topic within recent literature in HCI is the integration of UX activities into agile development. While we acknowledge the question of integration to be one of the main challenges for UX professionals, this seems to have received traction and is heading closer towards a resolution. We believe the time is right for gaining an in-depth understanding of the UX roles responsibilities in an agile case company that has moved beyond the question of UX integration. Through interviews with UX professionals, developers and managers we found that the UX professionals have a very broad set of responsibilities, of which some are unseen in relation to previous studies and not classically considered part of the UX role. Interestingly, these newly identified responsibilities are some of the most critical to the success of integrating UX into agile development.

Decisions continue to be important to researchers, organizations and societies. However, decision research requires reorientation to attain the future of data-driven decision making, accommodating such emerging topics and information technologies as big data, analytics, machine learning, and automated decisions. Accordingly, there is a dire need for reforming decision theories to encompass the new phenomena. This paper proposes a modern data-driven decision theory, DECAS, which extends upon classical decision theory by proposing three main claims: (1) (big) data and analytics (machine) should be considered as separate elements; (2) collaboration between the (human) decision maker and the analytics (machine) can result in a collaborative rationality, extending beyond the classically defined bounded rationality; and (3) meaningful integration of the classical decision making elements with data and analytics can lead to more informed, and possibly better, decisions. This paper elaborates the DECAS theory and clarifies the idea in relation to examples of data-driven decisions.
