Usability test of 3Dconnexion 3D mice versus keyboard + mouse in Second Life undertaken by people with motor disabilities due to medullary lesions

Abstract: The use of keyboard and mouse combinations to navigate 3D environments of virtual worlds requires the coordination of both hands in order for the 2D degrees of motion of the mice to transform into the variety of motions available in a 3D presented by manufacturers as significant interface alternatives. To establish the feasibility of such claims, we have conducted a usability test of two 3D mice marketed by 3Dconnexion, in parallel with a keyboard+mouse test. The 10 participants had motor disabilities due to m… Show more

“…The three‐dimensional mouse proficiency test uses proprietary software to assess proficiency with the use of the three‐dimensional mouse (3DxWare 10, 3Dconnexion Spacemouse, part of SpacePilot Pro device, 3Dconnexion, Boston, MA) (Figure A) . This task requires the participant to use the three‐dimensional mouse to rotate and maneuver an object in a three‐dimensional environment represented on a two‐dimensional screen (ASUS N56V laptop, Asus, Taipei, Taiwan) with a final goal of overlaying the object on a silhouette of itself (Figure B).…”

“…W artykule [7] Jednym z przykładów zastosowania myszki 3D jest branża rozrywkowa, a konkretnie gry wideo. W artykule [9] wykazano iż dla osób posiadających motoryczne dysfunkcje wykorzystanie myszki 3D w grze "Second Life" upro ciło rozgrywkę względem standardowego zestawu mysz 2D i klawiatura. Badania przeprowadzono na dziesięcioosobowej grupie, połowa osób przypisana była do myszki 3D, a druga połowa do myszki 2D.…”

“…Still, there exist some interfaces to accomplish teleoperation tasks in a cheaper and easier way. For instance, in [30] authors evaluate the use of two different SpaceMouse (3D mouse) devices versus the traditional keyboard and mouse. This study shows how, in particular for people with motor disabilities, the participants find it more challenging to perform the tasks with the keyboard and mouse than with the 3D devices, and easier with the SpaceMouse R Compact rather than SpaceMouse R Pro version.…”
