Usability of the Clinical Care Classification System for Representing Nursing Practice According to Specialty

Abstract: This study examined the ability of the Clinical Care Classification system to represent nursing record data across various nursing specialties. The data comprised nursing care plan records from December 1998 to October 2008 in a medical center. The total number of care plan documentation we analyzed was 2 060 178, and we used a process of knowledge discovery in datasets for data analysis. “…To overcome this challenge, we used a standard nursing terminology, the Clinical Care Classification (CCC) system, that contains a conceptual framework which represents nursing practice. Previous studies verified that CCC concepts, 176 nursing diagnoses and 201 nursing interventions categorized into 21 care component classes, highly represent the nursing process [12][13][14]. Therefore, using CCC concepts enabled the process of converting abstract nursing concern concepts into objectifiable concepts on which nurses could evaluate and reach consensus.…”

“…A shortage of solid knowledge exists regarding the prevalence and distribution of patient needs among clinical settings and diseases. Only a few studies have been based on large hospital databases that included nursing diagnostic data (Halloran & Kiley 1987, Rosenthal et al 1995, Welton & Halloran 2005, Park et al 2006, O'Brien-Pallas et al 2010, Feng & Chang 2015. Nonetheless, studies such as these are central to improving the knowledge on the epidemiology of NDs.…”
