Usability inspection methods after 15 years of research and practice

Abstract: Usability inspection methods, such as heuristic evaluation, the cognitive walkthrough, formal usability inspections, and the pluralistic usability walkthrough, were introduced fifteen years ago. Since then, these methods, analyses of their comparative effectiveness, and their use have evolved in different ways. In this paper, we track the fortunes of the methods and analyses, looking at which led to use and to further research, and which led to relative methodological dead ends. Heuristic evaluation and the co… Show more

“…The heuristic evaluation method can be used by experts and non-experts [12], although expert evaluators typically produce better results [15,27]. Further, the method is widely accepted as relatively easy and cost-effective in evaluating the usability and accessibility of interactive systems' interfaces [12,26].…”

“…As far as usability measurement is concerned [8], this study employed the technique of cognitive walkthroughs [9], [10],which is a technique for evaluating the design of a user interface. This technique was chosen because it allows the evaluation to be conducted with a group of users who may not be subject-matter experts [11].…”
