Abstract. There is a lack of empirically validated usability evaluation methods that can be applied to models in model-driven Web development. Evaluation of these models allows an early detection of usability problems perceived by the end-user. This motivated us to propose WUEP, a usability inspection method which can be integrated into different model-driven Web development processes. We previously demonstrated how WUEP can effectively be used when following the Object-Oriented Hypermedia method. In order to provide evidences about WUEP's generalizability, this paper presents the operationalization and empirical validation of WUEP into another well-known method: WebML. The effectiveness, efficiency, perceived ease of use, and satisfaction of WUEP were evaluated in comparison to Heuristic Evaluation (HE) from the viewpoint of novice inspectors. The results show that WUEP was more effective and efficient than HE when detecting usability problems on models. Also, inspectors were satisfied when applying WUEP, and found it easier to use than HE.

Websites are an important and efficient means of communication for companies wishing to interact with their clients. Therefore, research has focused on evaluating how websites should be structured to ensure their quality. The majority of this research has focused on evaluating the quality of individual pages or that of a site as a whole. In this article, we propose the use of two‐level models that combine evaluations at the page level with evaluations at the site level, and applied them to the problem of evaluating the navigability of websites. To test our models, we conducted a study with 21 subjects who had to complete navigation tasks on several websites, and compared their quality judgments to those produced by single and two‐level quality models. We found that two‐level models are better predictors of navigability. Finally, we show how two‐level models are able to suggest modifications to improve site navigability. User Interface (UI) development is a challenging task as modern UIs are expected to be available across a wide range of diverse platforms while assuring high usability for heterogeneous users. Model-driven engineering principles have been applied in the context of multi-device and cross-device UI development to tackle complexity in development. While previous work related to usability evaluation of model-driven UIs primarily focused on single-and multi-device UIs, an investigation of the usability of model-driven cross-device UIs was not fully covered yet. In this paper, therefore, we present a model-driven UI development (MDUID) approach for cross-device UIs and analyze whether the applied MDUID approach has a positive impact on the usability of the generated UI. To accomplish this, we conduct a usability evaluation based on the generated UI for a cross-channel banking web application. The usability evaluation results provide detailed feedback regarding fulfillment of different usability criteria and enable improvement of involved models as well as model transformations.
