US with Extended Field of View: Phantom-tested Accuracy of Distance Measurements

Abstract: To evaluate the accuracy of distance measurements obtained with the extended-field-of-view (FOV) software of a commercially available ultrasonographic scanner, two custom-designed phantoms that allowed scanning of flat and curved surfaces were used. “…The CSA measured from the imaging plane that is perpendicular to the scanning table as during CT scans (line x) is not perpendicular to the muscle at this region (line y). Therefore CSA measured in plane y, as during EFOV US imaging, would be a more accurate estimate of the anatomical CSA are not confident that this is the case because a high level of validity has been shown in work using phantoms of known size (Fornage et al 2000) and a high validity was shown in the present study at some thigh regions. Ahtiainen et al (2010) also suggest that the compression of the muscle tissue cannot be excluded as a factor affecting CSA measurements, however great care was taken in their study and also in the present study to ensure tissue compression did not occur.…”
