The present paper investigates, from a cognitive perspective, the production of humour in terms of creativity through the analysis of some selected caricatures about the Egyptian Pound Floatation (EPF). The analysis is tackled from a cognitive linguistic point of view using Berthold's (2012) Bisociative Knowledge Discovery (BKD), which is based on Koestler's (1964) Theory of Bisociation as presented in his book The Act of Creation. Koestler's theory states that humor is created via linking (or bisociating in Koestler's term) two incompatible trains of thought in order to come up with a novel meaning that is both logical and unexpected. The study is cognitive as it confirms the cognitive linguistic principle which illustrates that language is thought; Cognitive Linguistics studies describe the manner by which language shapes thoughts. In this paper ten caricatures portraying the Egyptian financial crisis the EPF are analyzed to show that visual and verbal means of expressions, conceptually and satirically reveal the situation in the Egyptian society. To be more specific, it illustrates that visual and verbal conceptual techniques are tools of satire to perceive the economic and social drawbacks of this crisis. The analysis concludes that the integration (Bisociation as used by Koester) of the two trains of thought brings about the concepts of fear, suffering, threat, death, suicide, and poverty as the outcomes of the EPF (Eureka of Bisociation in the caricatures).

The Images of China in Political Cartoons of Foreign Media

This study was an attempt to conduct a multimodal discourse analysis of a corpus of 10 political cartoons with animals about China published in foreign media. It was guided by the qualitative research design employing discourse analysis as an approach, specifically employing descriptive and analytical techniques to explore how foreign media conveyed the hidden cultural connotations and communicative intentions to the world in political cartoons through multimodal discourse analysis from the perspective of function and cognition and finally revealed the images of China in political cartoons of foreign media. This study grounded its analysis and discussion on generic features, semiotic resources utilized, relationship among semiotic modes, three meta-functions construed, metaphors, images of China construed, and finally proposed a functional-cognitive analytical framework for political cartoons. The findings revealed the cultural connotations in political cartoons were meant to create a specific negative impression of China, and to convey a particular political message to the viewers. The communicative intentions were to shape and promote China's political, economic, military threats, hegemony in all aspects, and construed the images of China as economically, politically, and militarily threatening, domineering, hypocritical, bullying, cunning and greedy, which was catered to the foreign ideological purpose of "China Threat Theory".

Cartoon is a journalistic genre that is presented in simple, sort and catchy formats, which appeal to human sense and consequently allows for quick reception of the messages being communicated. Adejuwon & Alimi in Bello (2022) argued that cartoons serve as medium through which people are informed, educated, and entertained by presenting societal happenings in a hilarious manner. According to Bello, editorial cartoons are designed to satirise current political issues, and offer subtle criticism cleverly coated with humour and satire. Cartoons amuse, yet they are veritable means of exposing social ills and strategic way of conveying messages of deep meaning magnitude.
