US and MDCT Findings in a Caudal Blind Ending Bifid Ureter with Calculi

Abstract: Herein we present a rare ureteric duplication anomaly; blind ending bifid ureter with calculi which is asymptomatic unless complicated by infection, reflux, calculi or malignancy. The diagnosis is often missed at intravenous urography (IVU) and US because the ipsilateral ureter and kidney are grossly normal. In this case the diagnosis was established with ultrasound (US) and mainly with multidetector computerized tomography (MDCT) imaging using multiplanar reformats and 3-D reconstructions which were unique to… Show more

“…Some authors claim that a cap of nephrogenic tissue representing the remnant of the metanephric blastema ( 6 , 7 ) or a fibrous band connecting the upper blind extremity with a metanephric remnant ( 3 ) may be present, while others have not reported such observations ( 8 ) .…”

“…Most cases are diagnosed during common urological investigations such as intravenous urography, retrograde pyelography, or diagnostic cystoscopy. Computed tomography and MRI are also capable of detecting these anomalies, but this is dependent on the scan protocol that is used [6] , [7] . In particular, the value of multidetector computed tomography imaging using multiplanar reformats and 3D reconstructions to establish the diagnosis has been described in the literature.…”

“…In particular, the value of multidetector computed tomography imaging using multiplanar reformats and 3D reconstructions to establish the diagnosis has been described in the literature. This allows a detailed evaluation of the anatomy of the urinary system and exclusion of other possible etiologies [7] .…”
