Ursolic acid inhibits the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by attenuating endoplasmic reticulum stress

Abstract: Ursolic acid (UA) is a natural pentacyclic triterpenoid compound, which is enriched with many herbs and plants, such as apple, cranberry and olive. UA performs multiple biological activities including anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-cancer and hepatoprotection. However, the exact mechanism underlying the hepatoprotective activity of UA remains unclear. In this study, the effects of UA on the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) were investigated. In vivo, UA treatment (0.14%, w/w) si… Show more

“…But, nowadays many results showed UA may ameliorate disease progression in patients with NAFLD. Li et al (2015) suggested that UA treatment (10-30 lg/mL) inhibited the development of NAFLD via increasing lipid b oxidation and inhibiting the hepatic endoplasmic reticulum stress. Jia et al (2011) showed that UA was a PPAR-a agonist which regulated hepatic lipid metabolism and, therefore, significantly reduced intracellular triglyceride concentrations in hepatocytes.…”

“…UA inhibited the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, with a decrease in liver weight and hepatic steatosis, as well as accumulation of intracellular lipids, possibly due to an increase in lipid b-oxidation and inhibition of hepatic stress. [22] Cardioprotective effect…”
