Urothelial carcinoma with villoglandular differentiation: a study of 14 cases

Abstract: Tumors of the urinary bladder may have a variety of histological patterns. Tumors with either glandular or villous features, such as villous adenomas, in situ adenocarcinomas, invasive adenocarcinomas, and variants of urothelial carcinoma such as micropapillary carcinomas have been described. However, urothelial carcinomas with both villous and glandular features have not been well characterized. We identified 14 cases of urothelial carcinoma with villoglandular differentiation. These cases were defined as hav… Show more

“…Therefore, we decided to use the preferred term of flat carcinoma in situ with glandular differentiation (CISg) to refer to this entity thus avoiding misunderstanding with precursor lesions of invasive adenocarcinoma which are not in the scope of this study . None of the previously reported cases had associated pure invasive adenocarcinoma or villous adenoma nor developed these lesions on follow-up [1][2][3]13,15], similar to the cases reported in the current series.…”

“…Carcinoma in situ (high-grade intraurothelial neoplasia) refers to a flat noninvasive neoplastic change of the urothelium with substantial architectural and cytological abnormalities, the latter being indistinguishable from those of carcinoma [10,11,13,19,20]. Primary or isolated CIS accounts for less than 10% of cases of CIS, and 1% of bladder tumors [10,11,13,19,20].…”

“…The bladder lesions showed male preponderance than female accounting for 51.1% and 48.9% of the cases respectively. Our observations are in accordance with Lim et al [14] and Vaidya et al [12]. The increased prevalence of bladder lesions in males observed in our study could be attributed to cigarette smoking, industrial exposure to acrylamine, schistosoma haematobium, cyclophosphamide, artificial sweetners and long acting analgesics.…”
