Urodynamics: Examining the Current Role of UDS Testing. What is the Role of Urodynamic Testing in Light of Recent AUA Urodynamics and Overactive Bladder Guidelines and the VALUE Study?

Abstract: Urodynamics testing is a diagnostic assessment of the lower urinary tract system composed of multiple tests to obtain physiologic data regarding lower urinary tract function (detrusor and outlet) during storage and emptying. The necessity of urodynamics has been both supported and challenged in various urologic conditions such as urinary incontinence, neurogenic bladder, lower urinary tract symptoms, and bladder outlet obstruction. This review discusses the most recent studies with regards to the utility of ur… Show more

“…The basic characteristics of the patients are shown in Table 1. Research was performed in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki, international rules and standards for urodynamic examinations [Brown et al 2013;Gurpreet et al 2010;Schafer et al 2002;Schroder et al 2009;Singh et al 2010]. Patients with severe symptoms of OAB (frequency of incontinence episodes [IEs] ⩾ 3/ day) were included in the study [Rovner, 2005;Dmochowski et al 2009;Wu et al 2011]; patients with chronic active diseases and patients with intolerance to antimuscarinic drugs were excluded.…”

“…Local recording and various pacing maneuvers are used for risk stratification, arrhythmia induction, and for the identification of appropriate sites for cardiac ablation. Urologists and urogynecologists do not have such capability, which could be a potential advancement over the utility of urodynamic testing or an adjunct to improve nerve stimulation surgeries . This pilot study assesses whether cardiac electrophysiology catheters are useful for mapping bladder electrical activity at the time of cystoscopy.…”

“…The importance of standardization of protocols for performance of human urodynamic testing between and among studies has recently been emphasized (5,20), but it is also recognized that variation among urodynamic testing protocols makes it extremely difficult to compare studies performed over time in the same patient, complicates comparisons of results between patients, and raises questions about how results of urodynamic testing relate to normal and aberrant physiology of micturition (26). However, when methodology utilized to perform urodynamic studies was tightly controlled in a prospective manner, results appeared to be highly reproducible and consistent within individuals and among testing sites (20 total sites) (16).…”
