Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is defined as different degrees of disability in social interaction, stereotyped behavior, and altered motor and sensory perception. Many scientific research are concerned with making and developing animal models of autism to figure out the appropriate correlation between behavioural changes and the pathology of brain tissue to help in clinical trials of effective therapeutic formulations. Propionic acid can be present inside the cells as metabolite in a normal state and present in high amount in the gut due to some digestive disorders or alteration in gut microbiota. Moreover, it is considered an artificial food additive. Lately, propionic acid has become a controversy model. This review assessment demonstrates a complete picture and all the available information is needed to be known about the mechanism of action of the induced autistic model. It discusses the different methods explains the pathophysiology, and various treatment modalities were tried in the propionic induced animal model. It also enlists the developmental and behavioral aspects of the model animals

Autism is a neurological disease that affects social reciprocity and communication throughout life. Autism has been on the rise at an alarming rate over the last three decades, while the frequency appears to vary by country. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of Moringa oleifera leaves on sodium valproate (VPA) induced autistic-like rat model on the liver and kidney function and histopathology changes in rats compared with the synthetic drug risperidone. 40 pregnant females rats, 5 of them were used as control and the other 35 received a single oral dose of 800 mg/kg valproic acid (VPA) on the 11 th day of gestation then their offspring after weaning were randomly distributed into equal groups (n=8) and treated for 25 days as group 1: (Cont-) offspring of control mothers, (Cont+) VPA injection served as control positive, group 3: VPA+ moringa(400/mg/kg b. wt, p.o), group 4: VPA+ RIS (1 mg/kg b. wt, p.o), and group 5: VPA+ moringa + RIS. The rats were sacrificed at the end of the experiment and serum was used for the estimation of serum aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), urea, and creatinine in addition to the histopathological study of the liver and brain. The results showed improvement in the weight, liver, and kidney function by moringa and/or risperidone treatment in comparison with VPA treated group. Therefore, it may be concluded that Moringa oleifera extract had a protective effect due to its impact on liver and kidney function.

Urtica dioica is a perennial herb from the family of Urticaceae that is commonly known as stinging nettle. This plant is widespread in Europe, Africa, America, and a part of Asia, as it adapts to different environments and climatic conditions. The leaves, stalk, and bark of U. dioica found applications in the field of nutrition, cosmetics, textile, pest control and pharmacology. In this connection, bioactive chemical constituents such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, amino acids, carotenoids, and fatty acids have been isolated from the plant. With this review, we aim at providing an updated and comprehensive overview of the contributions in literature reporting computational, in vitro, pre-clinical and clinical data supporting the therapeutic applications of U. dioica. Experimental evidence shows that U. dioica constituents and extracts can provide neuroprotective effects by acting through a combination of different molecular mechanisms, that are discussed in the review. These findings could lay the basis for the identification and design of more effective tools against neurodegenerative diseases. Graphical Abstract
