Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common global problems associated with health conditions. Patients suffering from UTIs like other patients with clinical infections are liable to suffer from wide variety of infectious agents. This study evaluates the presence of uropathogenic bacteria so that appropriate measures to curb their menace could be enhanced. A total of 200 urine sampleswere collected from pregnant women between the ages of ≤20 to 40. CLED (Cystein Lactose Electrolyte Deficient) agar was used for differential isolation of uropathogenic bacteria. Positive samples were subjected to Gram’s staining and biochemical identification to confirm their identities. Socio-demographic factors and clinical information were used to investigate the incidence. Organisms isolated were Escherichia coli, Proteus spp. Citrobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Yersinia enterocolitica and Vibrio spp. with incidences of 54.4%, 12.2%, 10%, 5.6%, 5.6%, 3.3%, 3.3%, 3.3% and 2.2 respectively. In relation to =age group, women at 20 years or less had 50% (n=6/12) incidence, 21-25 years 63.3% (n=38/60), 26-30 years 42.9% (30/70), 31-35 years 34.3% (12/35) and 36-40 years 17.4% (4/23). Socio-demographic factors revealed that the sexually inactive educated women with good hygienic status and with repeated infection were found to have loweruropathogenic prevalence than the sexually active uneducated and unhygienic women with first time infection. E. coli had the highest frequency and Vibrio spp. had the least occurrence. The growth of Vibrio spp. and the other unrelated species to urine may be attributed to the improper hygiene of the pregnant women. The age group with highest incidence was 21-25 years. Thismay be due to the fact that women in this group are the most sexually active and might have had many previous pregnancies.

Urinary tract infections are the most common illnesses that impact pregnant women. This study aimed to investigate bacterial urinary tract infections and antibiotic susceptibility profiles in pregnant women. This study was conducted on pregnant women between April and October 2021 in clinics and hospitals in the Damt district. Midstream urine samples were collected, cultured, identified and tested for antibiotic susceptibility. The prevalence of UTI in pregnant women was 210/350 (60%). Escherichia coli accounted for 90/210 (42.9%), Staphylococcus aureus 50/210 (23.8%), and Klebsiella pneumoniae 25/210 (11.9%). Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus mirabilis exhibited 15/210 (7.1%) of each with the moderately identified bacterial species. Antimicrobial sensitivity testing showed that bacterial isolates were resistant to amoxicillin (80-100%), ceftriaxone (40-70%), gentamycin (0-60%), amikacin (0-50%), tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, azithromycin, and amoxiclav (0-40%), and azithromycin (0-30%). Significant bacteriuria was associated with age (p = 0.01), pregnancy trimesters (p = 0.00), gestation (p = 0.00), and residence (p = 0.03), whereas there was no association with education (p = 0.05). Most isolates have become resistant toward antibiotic used in the study treatments, especially ceftriaxone and amoxicillin. Therefore, it is recommended that pregnant women undergo health education on the prevalence and causes of urinary tract infections.

Background: Asymptomatic bacteriuria is the occurrence of bacteria in the urine sample without any clinical symptoms. The odds of asymptomatic bacteriuria increase due to the hormonal growth during pregnancy. Methodology: The data was collected from a sample of size 167 pregnant women using self-structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was based on two sections. The questionnaire was tested using Cronbach alpha. The data was collected using convenient sampling. The frequency distribution of the risk factors was given. The binary logistic regression analysis was performed to access the major risk factors that enhance the odds for asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnant women. Results: The past history of UTI was seen as a significant risk factor. The overall incidence of asymptomatic bacteriuria was found in 22 pregnant women and among these, approximately 9% had past history of UTI. About 44.9% of the pregnant women showed a past history of UTI. Conclusion: Most of the pregnant women fall in the age group 26-32 years. The significant factor is age group for asymptomatic bacteriuria. Advancement in age enhance the odds for the asymptomatic bacteriuria. History of UTI is found as a significant risk factor.
