Urinary Mercury Levels and Predictors of Exposure among a Group of Italian Children

Abstract: Urinary mercury (Hg) levels are suitable to assess long-term exposure to both elemental and inorganic Hg. In this study, the urinary Hg levels of 250 children (aged 6–11 years) from three areas with different anthropogenic impacts in the Rieti province, central Italy, were assessed. The Hg concentrations were in the range of 0.04–2.18 µg L−1 with a geometric mean equal to 0.18 µg L−1 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.17–0.20 µg L−1] or 0.21 µg g−1 creatinine (95% CI, 0.19–0.23 µg g−1 creatinine), and a referenc… Show more

“…Urinary elements were analyzed by ICP-MS (820-MS; Bruker, Bremen, Germany) equipped with a collision reaction interface (CRI) for Ba, Be, Bi, Cd, Cs, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Se, Sr, Te, and V and by CV-AFS (AFS 8220 Titan, FullTech Instruments, Rome, Italy) for Hg, as described previously, with minor modifications [20][21][22]. The parameters and operating conditions of ICP-MS are detailed elsewhere [23].…”

“…A CV-AFS (AFS 8220 Titan, FullTech Instruments, Rome, Italy) was used for Hg determination. The preparations of the calibration standards and the detailed ICP-MS and CV-AFS operating conditions were described in previous papers [ 62 , 63 , 64 ]. The limits of determination (LoDs) and quantification (LoQs) were calculated, respectively, as three and ten times σ/b, where σ is the standard deviation of blank determination (ten replicates) and b is the slope of the calibration curve.…”
