Urinary Glycosaminoglycans in Patients with Hypothyroidism and in Healthy Subjects

Abstract: Although the changes in urinary glycosaminoglycans have been investigated in several endocrinopathies, no information was hitherto available on the content and composition of urinary glycosaminoglycans in hypothyroidisin. Urinary glycosaminoglycans were therefore investigated in patients with hypo thy roidism and in healthy subjects. The total daily excretion of urinary glycosaminoglycans was found to be significantly increased (by 41 %) in hypothyroidism. Two electrophoretic bands were always detected in both… Show more

“…The pathogenesis of muscle changes in patients with levothyroxine use has been only sparsely investigated [3]. Thyroid hormones are a major regulator of glucose metabolism and oxidative phosphorylation [32,33], muscle units' function and plasticity, and connective tissue metabolism [34], and clinical overt thyroid dysfunction has known association with generalized myopathy. More importantly, in accordance with our ndings, while muscle atrophy was observed, there was minimal fat in ltration and adipose changes in the muscle [35].…”

“…Thyroid hormones have regulatory effects on connective tissue metabolism (22). Connective tissue and extracellular matrix protein metabolisms have been shown to be altered in hypothyroidism (24,25). Prolidase plays an important role in the proline recycling in collagen synthesis and it seems that prolidase activity may be a regulator in collagen biosynthesis (26).…”

“…Because of these difficulties, we believe that sHA might be more useful in detecting inactive disease, since its negative predictive value is rather good (95%). uGAGs levels may be reduced by hypothyroidism excretion (Tokoro & Eto, 1985; Wlad et al ., 1988) but we evaluate patients when euthyroid. Other diseases that could cause interferences on uGAGs determination are either relatively rare (inherited diseases) or suspected by clinical examination (cancer, rheumatic and cirrhotic diseases).…”
