Urinary Excretion of Oestriol and Pregnanediol During Bougie-Induced Abortion in Mid-Pregnancy

Abstract: Two rubber bougies were inserted between the uterine wall and the foetal membranes in each of six normal women in mid-pregnancy to induce abortion, and the changes in uterine activity were recorded. Significant uterine contractions were noted within 33 hr. and increased gradually, resulting in all cases in abortion within 45 hr. The excretion of oestriol and pregnanediol in 6 hr. urine collections did not change significantly during the treatment, and the placenta and foetal membranes when delivered did not sh… Show more

“…In the uterus, stretch causes depolarization, the initiation of spikes and an increase in spike frequency (Goto & Woodbury, 1958). There is a possibility that the myogenic nature of the uterus may have played an important role in the onset and progress of labour as described in this study (Manabe, 1968;Manabe & Yoshida, 1973).…”

“…Pregnancy can be terminated at any time during mid-trimester by purely mechanical stimulation of the uterus using a rubber bougie or balloon (Manabe, 1968(Manabe, , 1969. Since no exogenous oxytocic substances such as oxytocin or prostaglandins are used to induce abortion, the mechanism for inducing labour is physiologically interesting.…”
