“…The ovarian cycle length of 23.8 ± 0.6 days, found in female Goeldi's monkeys in this study, compares well with the figure of 27.8 ± 5.2 days reported by Christen et al [4] and the previous estimate of 22-24 days based on the behavioural oestrous cycle [1,3], Peak levels of urinary oestrogen excretion occur during the luteal phase of the ovarian cycle in all callitrichid monkeys studied to date [8,14] and in the owl monkey [ 12], The similarity in the pattern of concentrations of urinary oestrone conjugates in female Goeldi's monkeys to the pattern of urinary oes trogen excretion seen in female callitrichid and owl monkeys suggests that the cyclical peaks of urinary oestrone conjugate excre tion in Goeldi's monkeys occurred during the luteal phase of the ovarian cycle. This suggestion is supported by Ziegler et al [5], who show that the pre-ovulatory LH peak coincides with the beginning of the postpar tum rise in conjugated urinary oestrone con centrations.…”

“…Christen et al [4] have shown that measurements of the less abundant oestra diol in the urine of female Goeldi's monkeys will also reveal the cycle.…”

“…The first reports of re productive endocrinology for Callimico oc cur in this report and this volume [2,3], The aim of this paper is to document several aspects of the reproductive physiology of Goeldi's monkey. Specifically, this study was designed to determine the endocrinology of the postpartum period by measuring urinary hormones.…”

“…Studies of this species in captivity have been concerned with reproductive behaviour (Beck et al, 1982;Carroll, 1982Carroll, , 1985 and various aspects of reproductive endocrinology. The data available on female reproductive endocrinology of Goeldi's monkey constitute descriptions of the ovarian cycle and of pregnancy based on the metabolites of reproductive steroid and peptide hormones in urine or faeces (Carroll et al, 1989(Carroll et al, , 1990Christen et al, 1989;Ziegler et al, 1989Ziegler et al, , 1990a Pryce and Döbeli, 1992; Jurke et al, in press).…”
