Urinary Excretion of Luteinizing Hormone in Boys and Adult Men

Abstract: SUMMARY The daily urinary excretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) was determined in 15 boys, aged 5–11 yr., and in 15 adult men, aged 18–65 yr., by an immunological method using the haemagglutination inhibition system. The hormone was detected in every subject investigated. The mean value for urinary LH excretion in boys was equivalent to 3·4 i.u./24 hr. (range 1·3–6·5) and was 29·3 i.u./24 hr. in adults (range 15·4–44·6). The mean adult: child ratio was 8·6. There was a significant incre… Show more

“…of LH per 24 hours). This observation confirms that there is the same sharp rise in the urinary excretion of LH in the female at puberty as is found in the male (Sciarra and Leone, 1970). Moreover, the LH output in normal menstruating women increased with age, but not significantly.…”

“…LH output increased significantly with age in both boys and men. The rate of this increase was the same in h t h groups but there was a sharp rise at puberty (Sciarra and Leone, 1970). In the present study we report on the urinary excretion of LH in girls and normal menstruating women with a view to verifying the results obtained in the males and to delineating the change in LH excretion during puberty in the female.…”

“…of FSH and 6.5 i.u. of LH (Sciarra and Leone, 1970). However, a positive test might be obtained with urinary and serial extracts from intact human subjects because of cross-reaction between HCG and LH (Wide, Roos andGemzell, 1961 : Leone andSciarra, 1966).…”

“…Several authors have demonstrated measurable gonadotropin levels in serum [5,18,26,53] and in urine [11,24,35,43] of prepubertal males, but the relation of these levels to testosterone secretion has not been clearly eludicated. Some authors [3,43] have reported gradually rising excretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) in urine of males during childhood, with a more abrupt 2-fold increase at puberty. Buckler and Clayton [4] showed low LH excretion levels from age 3 months to 6 years, after which gradually rising levels were seen, with a further marked increase at puberty.…”
