Urinary biomarkers indicate pediatric renal injury among rural farming communities in Sri Lanka

Abstract: Pediatric renal injury is an emerging health concern in communities affected by chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology (CKDu). Early detection of susceptibilities through highly sensitive and specific biomarkers can lead to effective therapeutic and preventive interventions against renal diseases. Here, we aimed to investigate the utility of kidney injury molecule (KIM-1) and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) in early detection of renal abnormalities in selected pediatric communities in S… Show more

“…CT scans in kidney examinations are ideal for study because they provide three-dimensional information and slice-by-slice images. If kidney abnormalities such as cysts, stones, and tumors are not detected and treated early, they might lead to renal failure 10 . For this reason, early diagnosis of renal disorders like kidney cysts, stones, and tumors appears to be an important step in preventing kidney failure 11 .…”

“…Other countries in this region show similar prevalence data in farming communities with 14.4% in Iran, 14% in Qatar, and 19.9% in Saudi Arabia [3 ▪▪ ]. Children in endemic areas show evidence of kidney damage including elevated tubular injury biomarkers and mild kidney functional impairment considered early stages of CKDu; however, further studies are needed to determine the prevalence and significance of these findings [10 ▪ ,11–12].…”

“…34 During the past three decades, agricultural communities in dry, lowland agroecology zones have been at risk of contracting a deadly CKDu. [35][36][37][38][39] A research team controversially claimed that arsenic caused CKDu disease in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. This research team was led by a group of university professors who are pronationalists and political ideologists.…”

“…Sri Lanka has seven agro‐climatic zones further subdivided into 46 agroecological regions 34 . During the past three decades, agricultural communities in dry, lowland agroecology zones have been at risk of contracting a deadly CKDu 35–39 . A research team controversially claimed that arsenic caused CKDu disease in the dry zone of Sri Lanka.…”
